Carbon fiber/polyimide composites are preferred as face sheets of heat-resistant sandwich structure. Among such composites, PMR-15 developed by NASA is widely known. Camarda et al. developed heat-resistant sandwich structures made of carbon fiber/PMR-15 face sheet and glass fiber/PMR-15 core. The resulting product has been designed to replace PMR-15 polyimide, speciality metals and even BMI composites in high-temperature airframe and propulsion applications for military, commercial and general aviation structures requiring 375°F to 475°F wet and 500°F to 550°F dry operating environments.

The current study summarizes state of the art techniques in characterizing the thermally oxidized matrix resin system (PMR-15 polyimide), and develops novel techniques in direct mechanical measurement of the spatial variability of mechanical properties. Works to date and future advances in the field with respect to in situ testing are presented. The initial PMR resin, known as PMR-15, is still commercially available and is used worldwide by the aerospace industry as the state-of-the-art resin for high-temperature polyimide composite applications; including engine bypass ducts, nozzle flaps, bushings, and bearings.

These polymerized monomeric reactant (PMR) resins, based in aromatic dianhydride ester acid and aromatic diamine chemistry and polymerized through solvent addition, eventually became aerospace industry-standard PMR-15 and PMR-II-50 formulations.
